Why We Filipinos Are Poor?

Why are Filipinos so poor? What really went wrong? And why it still continues?

I was on inside a bus, observing everything I see when the question suddenly pop up in my mind. When I got home I read on some articles which will give me the answer.

I found out that 34.2 of the population of Filipinos is living below the poverty line(NSO, 2000). And a survey was conducted on September 2007, found a result that almost 52 percent of the Filipinos consider themselves “mahirap” or poor.

Majority of the Pinoys have the habit of thinking poor and it is proven. Poor people spend more time talking, idle, gossip and drink to the neighborhood`s store. Some are striving for money just to spend it with their vices without any care of their family. Even when you go to mountain areas, you could see some filipinos doing nothing instead of doing something profitable. Why Filipinos are so poor? Because of the word “lazy”.

Filipinos don`t know how to handle money. Some spend spend money as if it`s going to be out of fashion. Look are our women how they over-dressed and how over-coiffed they are, and Imelda epitomizes that extravagance. And with our men the way they dress, their personal jewelries and too much care of themselves. “Yabang” or arrogant — that is what we have. That is why we Filipinos are so poor.

And finally, We are so poor because we condone cronyism and corruption and we don`t ostracize or punish the crooks on our society. We know that cronyism and corruption are the waste on our society but we consider them because our loyalty is to family or friends. We don`t consider the larger group.
